Homewatch Caregivers Northshore has some truly outstanding caregivers that care for our clients. We recently received a letter from a previous client sharing her gratitude for all of the work our caregiver did for her mother.
We met Deidra M. in what turned out to be the last couple months of my mother Yolanda’s life. She came as an overnight caregiver while my mom still lived in her apartment. Right away I heard positive feedback from my mom, who had reluctantly agreed to overnight caregivers. Over the previous two years, my mom had gone through the various stages of grief over losing her independence.
I saw that my mother’s immediate fondness for Deidra was more than just Yolanda reaching the stage of acceptance. Deidra was patient, kind, and enjoyed listening to my mom’s stories. My mother took a genuine interest in Deidra’s life. A mutual caring relationship was born.
I soon came to know Deidra first-hand, when unfortunate circumstances required my mom to move out of her apartment. Fortunately, she moved into my home. Because of our stairs, we set up the hospital bed in our living room, which doubled as my mom’s sitting room. While we didn’t need overnight care, we did need caregiving while I was at work. My mother was very relieved when Deidra was adaptable and willing to come to our house. Arriving at 7 am she was in the middle of the morning rush at our house.
Not only did Deidra jump right in to find out how my mom slept, and what she needed immediately, she did it in the most loving manner. And with a sense of humor that got my mom smiling. Deidra maneuvered around my husband and I, as we got ready for work. She got to know both my grown daughters, and then my brother when he arrived. We had some great conversations about all matters of things. It was very comfortable having Deidra with us and we all felt supported by her.
Most importantly, my mom treasured Deidra’s companionship and care. I never saw Deidra lose her patience, whatever the task or request. She was very loving, and competent in both physical and emotional care, especially as my mom declined more rapidly.
I am truly grateful that Deidra came into my mom’s life when she did. She and Tamika, who had been a long-time caregiver and dear companion to my mom, helped provide loving care for Yolanda at the end of her life. They became an integral part of our family unit. We could not ask for more. My only regret is that we didn’t have Deidra with us sooner.
With deep appreciation,
Christine I. and Family
