As part of our continuing education program, Homewatch CareGivers Northshore holds quarterly in-services for our caregivers – exploring various topics of discussion that may help to improve their skills when working with their clients.
This past May, we all had the opportunity to step into the shoes of our clients – to experience what it’s like to have arthritis, to have difficulty with our vision and hearing, to be reliant on assistive devices like walkers and canes – all while doing basic every day tasks.
We discussed how these limitations not only affected us physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Lucky for us, we were able to instantly de-age after just a short period. However, for our clients this is EVERY DAY life. This experience has reminded us that the next time our client is having difficulty taking out her wallet to pay for groceries or is taking extra time picking out the correct bottle of medication – we need to practice more patience and understanding.
Here are a few snapshots of our time in our 70s, 80s and 90s.
