What happens during a stroke?

Strokes occur when the blood circulation to the brain is blocked, and the brain does not get enough oxygen for the cells to survive. When brain cells die, different functions such as speech and sense of touch are disrupted. Smaller strokes alter a person’s ability to function normally, and typically need a caregiver to assist them in daily activities going forward. Larger strokes cause severe damage and ultimately lead to death.
