Types of In-Home Care Services – Private Duty vs. Home Health
Before discussing home care payment options, we need to differentiate between home health care and home care (aka “private duty”).
Home Health Care
Home health care is typically paid for by Medicare or Medicaid and provides skilled care services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and checking blood pressure, temperature or respiration rates.
Home Care (Private Duty)
Home care (aka “private duty”) generally offers custodial care services that help seniors with their activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, light housekeeping, running errands and transportation, and can also include complex personal care. This is also commonly called personal care, non-medical home care and companion care. Home care is typically paid for by Long Term Care insurance, private payment, Age Options or the Veterans Administration.
